John Marshall, Geography Graduate Student

John Marshall, a part-time graduate student at the UNCC, is currently pursuing a Master of Arts degree in Geography with a concentration in Transportation Studies.

John presently works for Western Piedmont Council of Governments in Hickory, NC, and is the Rural Planning Organization (RPO) Coordinator for the newly formed Unifour RPO.

Rural Planning Organizations (RPOs) were ratified by the North Carolina General Assembly to address rural transportation systems and serve as counterparts to the existing Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs).  The purpose of RPOs is to give the rural areas of the state the much needed voice in transportation issues that they have lacked in the past.

John received a bachelor of science degree in Urban and Regional Planning with a minor in Geography from East Carolina University.  

John worked with Dr. Edd Hauser at the Center for Transportation Policy Studies on the formation of Rural Planning Organizations in North Carolina.  Marshall and Dr. Hauser conducted training sessions for local officials and staff members of the newly created RPOs.
