Second Annual Meeting

May 20-21, 2004

Purpose: Build on the two year initiative of establishing a statewide program of research, instruction, and outreach activities in disaster studies at universities and community colleges in North Carolina. Focus on a topic of current interest and significance. Identify emergency management and homeland security needs of state and local government practitioners. Provide a forum for describing and analyzing these activities and needs. Provide opportunities for collaboration across institutional and disciplinary activities that will improve the capability of North Carolina’s higher education institutions (University and Community College System) and our partners to reduce the impact of natural and human induced disasters on the people and economy of North Carolina. Develop a plan to further fund this initiative.

“AGENDA FOR A SAFER NORTH CAROLINA:

HAZARDS EDUCATION, RESEARCH, AND OUTREACH”

        

DATES: Thursday and Friday, May 20/21, 2004

 

TIMES:      Beginning with Registration at 8:00 am on Thursday; session starts at 9:00 am on Thursday and goes through Noon on Friday; (there will be a reception at the hotel on Thursday evening)

FORMAT: A “workshop” focus with two areas of emphasis:

(1) presentations and discussion of public health issues that could result from potential hazards, and other hazards research issues; (2) development of an action plan and funding strategy for the Institute of Disaster Studies.

Break-out planning sessions                 

Conference participants will be assigned to “Agenda Setting Workgroups” (20 -25 participants each). Each workgroup will have a facilitator and recorder and be charged with reviewing the hazards research, instruction and outreach needs that were identified at the 2003 Greenville workshop, and the input from the Thursday sessions in Charlotte. Each participant in the conference will be encouraged to provide input to the workshop proceedings. 

A summary report from the 2003 workshop is included with this agenda. Workgroups are asked to update the needs previously identified, and prepare a current list for each respective area. The focus on each breakout group will be to develop an action plan and funding strategy for ways that North Carolina universities and community colleges can fund various IDS initiatives (not confined to health related issues).
